A handcrafted modern interpretation of the nineteenth-century Psychograph, or Dial Planchette, a spirit communication instrument associated with American Spiritualist Hudson Tuttle. Built upon a substantial 12-inch Baltic birch wood round, this working Psychograph features a separate 7-inch rotating wooden dial whose pointed index moves across a stationary field of letters, numbers, and responses.

Unlike the more familiar talking board, where a planchette travels across the surface, the Psychograph reverses the arrangement: the communication field remains stationary while the central dial rotates beneath lightly resting fingertips, allowing its index to indicate responses around the board.

This piece draws from the structure and operating principles of historical Psychographs while remaining a distinctly modern, handcrafted interpretation rather than an antique reproduction.

The History

The Psychograph emerged from the nineteenth-century Spiritualist movement during a period of considerable experimentation with instruments intended to facilitate communication with spirits. American Spiritualist, author, and lecturer Hudson Tuttle became associated with a form known as The Psychograph, or Dial Planchette, during the latter nineteenth century.

Rather than using a loose planchette to travel across an alphabet board, Tuttle's Psychograph employed a rotating central dial with an index used to indicate letters, numbers, and predetermined responses arranged around a stationary surface.

Historical instructions for the instrument describe its use with the fingertips resting lightly upon the moving portion and allow for both group and solitary operation. Of particular interest, solitary use was specifically discussed as a method through which favorable results could be obtained.

This piece preserves that fundamental method while interpreting the physical instrument through contemporary craftsmanship and original hand-burned ornamentation.

The Structure

The Psychograph consists of two working wooden components.

The stationary 12-inch base carries the full alphabet, numerical sequence, and responses including YES, NO, GOOD BYE, and DON'T KNOW. Victorian-inspired botanical ornament and decorative linework frame the communication field while preserving clear visibility of the working surface.

Above it rests a separate 7-inch rotating dial, individually fitted with a concealed low-friction mechanism that allows it to move freely while remaining centered upon the communication field. Its gold-colored index indicates letters, numbers, or responses as the dial moves.

The removable dial and mechanical construction allow the piece to function as an actual working instrument rather than a purely decorative interpretation of the historical design.

Using the Psychograph

Place the Psychograph upon a stable, level surface and rest the fingertips lightly upon the rotating dial. Only gentle contact is required.

The instrument may be worked alone or with others. Ask a question and allow the dial freedom to move beneath the fingertips without deliberately directing it. The pointed index is then read against the stationary communication field. Letters may be recorded sequentially as communication progresses.

Excessive downward pressure should be avoided, as the dial is intentionally designed for free movement under a light touch.

Craftsmanship

Fully hand-burned pyrography across both the stationary base and rotating wooden dial. Victorian-inspired botanical flourishes and geometric ornament surround the functional communication field, while the rotating dial carries a symmetrical design created to remain visually balanced throughout its full rotation.

Both wooden components are finished within the same warm oak color family, with the different woods naturally accepting the stain at different depths and creating subtle contrast between the lighter stationary surface and darker rotating dial. A metallic gold-colored index provides increased visibility while complementing the warm, aged character of the finished wood.

The rotating assembly was individually constructed, fitted, aligned, and tested by hand for smooth movement and proper operation.

Every burned line, letter, decorative element, stain application, painted detail, and element of the final assembly was completed by hand.

Handcrafted and Consecrated

Created slowly and intentionally by hand. This piece carries natural variation, slight asymmetry, differences within the wood grain, and visible handcrafted character as part of its individuality and authenticity. Ritually prepared before leaving my hands.

The underside is permanently marked Fifth Gate Mystic · Psychograph · 2026, identifying its maker and year of creation.

• Wipe gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth as needed.
