A handcrafted modern interpretation of the nineteenth-century Psychograph, or Dial Planchette, a spirit communication instrument associated with American Spiritualist Hudson Tuttle. Built upon a substantial 12-inch Baltic birch round, it features a separate 7-inch rotating wooden dial whose pointed index moves across a stationary field of letters, numbers, and responses. At its center is an original Victorian Gothic-inspired rose window, entirely hand-burned and finished with restrained metallic bronze and gold detailing.
Limited Edition of Five
The Rose Window Psychograph is a closed edition of only five individually handcrafted pieces.
- No. 1/5, shown in the listing photographs and video, has been sold.
- Four pre-order positions remain: Nos. 2/5 through 5/5.
- Edition numbers are assigned in order of purchase.
- Each piece is created individually from start to finish upon order, not batch-produced.
- Pre-orders ship within approximately 4–5 weeks of placement; orders completed sooner ship as soon as they are ready.
- Each piece is permanently marked with its individual edition number and year, and the rotating dial is correspondingly marked to its numbered base.
- A signed Certificate of Authenticity and insurance valuation accompany each numbered piece.
- Once all five have been created, this limited edition will be permanently closed and will not be reproduced.
Natural wood grain, burn characteristics, stain absorption, and small details will vary between pieces. The photographs establish the edition design rather than machine-identical reproduction. Each handcrafted variation ensures that every numbered Psychograph remains a unique, one-of-a-kind object.
Pre-orders are final. Orders cannot be canceled or refunded once placed. Please review all listing information and shop policies carefully before purchasing.
How the Psychograph Works
Unlike the familiar talking board, the Psychograph reverses the arrangement: the communication field remains stationary while the central dial rotates beneath lightly resting fingertips, allowing its pointed index to indicate letters, numbers, or responses arranged around the board. Hudson Tuttle's method specifically addressed solitary use as a valid mode of practice, and this instrument supports both solo and group sessions.
Structure and Craftsmanship
The stationary 12-inch base carries the full alphabet, numerical sequence, and responses including YES, NO, GOOD BYE, and DON'T KNOW, surrounded by restrained Victorian-inspired ornament. Above it rests a separate 7-inch rotating wooden dial, individually fitted with a concealed low-friction mechanism for centered, free movement.
The Rose Window dial features an original radial composition inspired by Victorian Gothic rose-window architecture. Hand-burned architectural tracery and ornamental forms radiate around a prominent pointed index, with select details painted in metallic bronze and gold that catch and shift with changing light.
Every numbered piece is individually:
- Hand-burned
- Stained and finished
- Detailed in metallic bronze and gold
- Mechanically fitted and aligned
- Tested for smooth operation
- Permanently edition-marked
- Ritually prepared before leaving my hands
Dimensions
- Stationary base: approximately 12 inches in diameter, approximately 1/2 inch thick
- Rotating dial: approximately 7 inches in diameter
- Baltic birch base with separate wooden rotating dial; substantial wooden construction
Using the Psychograph
Place upon a stable, level surface. Rest fingertips lightly on the rotating dial and ask a question, allowing the dial freedom to move without directing it. Record letters sequentially as the pointed index indicates them against the stationary field. Do not place downward pressure upon the dial; it is designed for free movement under a light touch. An illustrated instruction card with operating guidance and historical context is included.

Care and Important Notes
- Operate upon a stable, level surface using light fingertip contact.
- Do not place downward pressure upon the dial.
- The central dial is intentionally removable and may be carefully lifted and replaced when necessary.
- Handle with care to preserve the finish, mechanical components, and metallic detailing.
- Avoid prolonged moisture, extreme heat, and open flame. Wipe gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth as needed.
- Colors may vary slightly due to lighting, monitor settings, natural wood variation, and the reflective character of metallic finishes.
- Listing photographs and video show No. 1/5, the completed first piece of the Rose Window edition. Remaining pre-orders will each receive the next individually handcrafted and numbered piece within the edition and are subject to the 4–5 week creation window.
This is a modern handcrafted interpretation of a historical form and is not an original nineteenth-century artifact or an exact reproduction of a surviving Hudson Tuttle Psychograph.
