Meet the Unseelie Psychograph, a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted spirit communication instrument inspired by the nineteenth-century Psychograph, or Dial Planchette, associated with American Spiritualist Hudson Tuttle. This working wooden instrument pairs extensive botanical pyrography and hand-painted detailing with four natural moonstone cabochons.

A stationary 12-inch Baltic birch wood base holds the alphabet, numbers, and responses. A separate 7-inch wooden dial rotates beneath lightly resting fingertips, using a defined pointer to indicate the surrounding communication field. An illustrated instruction card with the operating method and historical context is included.

This individual piece will not be recreated in this exact form.

“Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world’s more full of weeping than you can understand.”
— W. B. Yeats, The Stolen Child

Inspired by the Unseelie Court

Beautiful, alluring, wild, and never entirely tame: this Psychograph draws inspiration from the darker, more unpredictable reaches of Faerie rather than depicting the Unseelie Court literally.

Thorned vines weave among letters, numbers, wildflowers, berries, curling leaves, crescent moons, and small woodland details. The composition suggests an instrument slowly reclaimed by growth from beyond the cultivated garden.

Woodland greens, muted rose, antique gold, and shifting metallic tones emerge from the aged wood. The darker dial carries a dense radial botanical design around four polished moonstones, each with its own natural flash. At twelve o'clock, an elongated gold and botanical element forms the active pointer, providing a clear index against the stationary field.

A Working Dial Planchette

  • Stationary communication field: A full alphabet, numerical sequence, and YES, NO, GOOD BYE, and DON'T KNOW responses surrounded by hand-burned botanical and lunar details.
  • Rotating wooden dial: A separate dark-stained component with an original radial botanical composition, four natural moonstone cabochons, extensive hand-painted detailing, and a defined upper pointer.
  • Individually fitted mechanism: A concealed low-friction assembly allows the removable dial to move freely while remaining centered. Designed for use, not solely for display.
  • Included instruction card: Illustrated guidance covering the operating method and historical context.

Hand-Burned, Hand-Painted Craftsmanship

More than sixteen hours of handwork went into this individual Psychograph. Both wooden components feature extensive pyrography, with every letter, number, response, thorn, leaf, flower, and ornamental detail burned by hand.

The wood is individually stained and finished to contrast the stationary base with the darker dial. Extensive burned details throughout both components are individually hand-painted in woodland green, muted rose, antique gold, and shifting metallic tones, preserving the character of the pyrography beneath.

Four individually selected natural moonstone cabochons are permanently set into the dial. Their flash becomes brighter, paler, or nearly hidden as the light and viewing angle change. The rotating assembly was constructed, aligned, fitted, and tested by hand.

Historical Inspiration

The Psychograph emerged from the nineteenth-century Spiritualist movement, when instruments for spirit communication were being explored. American Spiritualist, author, and lecturer Hudson Tuttle became associated with The Psychograph, or Dial Planchette during the latter nineteenth century.

Unlike a talking board with a loose planchette traveling across its surface, this form uses a rotating central dial and index to indicate letters, numbers, and predetermined responses on a stationary field. Historical instructions describe light fingertip contact and both solitary and group operation.

This piece preserves that fundamental method as a modern handcrafted interpretation. It is not an original nineteenth-century artifact or an exact reproduction of a surviving Hudson Tuttle Psychograph.

Using the Psychograph

  1. Place the instrument on a stable, level surface.
  2. Rest your fingertips lightly on the rotating dial. Work alone or with others.
  3. Ask a question and allow the dial to move without deliberately directing it.
  4. Read the pointer against the stationary field, recording letters in sequence as desired.

Avoid excessive downward pressure so the dial can move freely. The included instruction card provides further guidance and historical context.

Care and Important Notes

  • Use on a stable, level surface with light fingertip contact. Do not force the dial or press down excessively.
  • The central dial is intentionally removable and may be carefully lifted and replaced when necessary.
  • Handle with care to protect the finish, mechanism, stones, and painted details. Avoid prolonged moisture, extreme heat, and open flame.
  • Wipe gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth as needed.
  • Natural moonstone variations, inclusions, internal lines, coloration, and differences in flash are inherent to each stone.
  • Colors, moonstone flash, and metallic detailing may appear different depending on lighting, viewing angle, monitor settings, and natural wood variation.
