One of a kind. This piece will not be recreated in this exact form.
A handcrafted 108-bead Ritual Mala for spirit communication, communion with the departed, ancestor work, and mindful approach to the boundary between the living and the dead. Obsidian, black agate, rosewood, sandalwood, reconstituted howlite skull beads, matte black glass seed beads, silver-colored metal accents, an ornate guru bead, an original freehand-burned Keyhole Seal, and a black tassel come together in a dark, grounded ritual tool.
Work the strand one bead at a time. Each of the 108 counting beads may accompany a prayer, petition, invocation, name, question, mantra, or focused intention.

The 108-Bead Structure
This mala contains 108 counting beads, preserving the traditional structure of a full mala. The strand combines rosewood, sandalwood, obsidian, black agate, and four reconstituted howlite skull beads. Warm natural wood and pale skull forms bring contrast to the predominantly dark palette of black stone and silver-colored metal.
The four skull beads form distinct stations within the counting strand, offering recurring images of mortality and remembrance as the practitioner moves through the full cycle. Matte black glass seed beads create subtle divisions and rhythm, while silver-colored metal accents define selected sections.
The counting strand meets beneath an ornate silver-colored metal guru bead, from which the wooden Keyhole Seal and black tassel hang.
The Keyhole Seal
Beneath the guru bead hangs an individually freehand-burned wooden Seal depicting a darkened keyhole. Its interior reveals nothing beyond the opening. It represents the presence of a threshold without presuming what waits on the other side.
Within this mala, the keyhole is an image of access, mystery, communication across boundaries, and the unseen beyond ordinary perception. It is not an invitation without limit. It marks the moment when one approaches a boundary and chooses deliberately whether and how to engage with what lies beyond it.
The Seal is an original element of this Ritual Mala design, not a traditional component of mala construction. It was created entirely freehand without tracing, engraving, laser equipment, or mechanical reproduction.
Sacred Materials
- Obsidian: commonly associated in contemporary magical practice with protection, grounding, boundaries, banishing, and hidden or unseen forces

- Sandalwood: traditionally used in devotional and ritual contexts, and commonly associated with spiritual practice, prayer, meditation, purification, and sacred space
- Reconstituted Howlite Skulls: represent mortality, remembrance, and the dead at four stations within the counting strand
- Matte Black Glass Seed Beads: add subtle separation and rhythm
- Silver-Colored Metal Accents: create contrast and definition among the darker materials
- Metal Guru Bead: forms the central junction of the mala
- Freehand-Burned Wooden Keyhole Seal: original artwork representing threshold, access, mystery, and the unseen

- Black Nylon Cord
Structure and Symbolism
The 108-bead structure is the mala's primary numerical foundation. The four skull beads distributed throughout the counting strand provide recurring reminders of mortality and the departed. Beneath the Keyhole Seal, two additional skulls terminate the bead falls surrounding the tassel.
Together, the darkened keyhole, skull imagery, black stone, natural wood, and silver-colored details create a piece centered not simply on death, but on approaching, acknowledging, and communicating across the boundary it represents.
Working With Your Ritual Mala
Begin with the first counting bead beside the guru bead and move through the strand one bead at a time. Each bead may accompany a prayer, petition, invocation, spirit or ancestor name, question, mantra, or focused intention. Upon returning to the guru bead, one complete cycle of 108 has been worked.
For spirit communication, work the mala before a session to focus and prepare the space, during appropriate repetitive invocation or petition, or afterward as part of closing, grounding, and reflection. It may also be incorporated into ancestor practice, placed on an altar, carried during cemetery work, worn, or kept within a sacred space when not actively in use.
Dimensions
- Counting beads: 108
- Neck loop, measured along one side: approximately 20 inches
- Full hanging length: approximately 25 inches
This is a long-form ritual piece. When worn, use mindfulness during activities where the mala may catch, swing freely, or repeatedly contact surrounding objects.
Handcrafted and Consecrated
This Ritual Mala was individually handcrafted and will be ritually blessed before leaving the studio. As a one-of-a-kind piece, this exact combination of materials, bead arrangement, metal components, skull elements, and freehand artwork will not be recreated.
