“Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing…”
— Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven

Meet the Nevermore Edition Psychograph, a one-of-a-kind, handcrafted spirit communication instrument inspired by the nineteenth-century Psychograph, or Dial Planchette, associated with American Spiritualist Hudson Tuttle. Its stationary 12-inch Baltic birch wood base holds the letters, numbers, and responses, while a separate 7-inch wooden dial rotates beneath lightly resting fingertips to point toward them.

Gothic lettering, hand-burned raven-feather imagery, aged wood, dark architectural borders, and iridescent detailing evoke the atmosphere of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. Four polished labradorite cabochons mark the cardinal points. Their natural flashes of blue, green, gold, and violet change with the light.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece and will not be recreated in this exact form. An illustrated instruction card with the operating method and historical context is included.

The History

The Psychograph emerged from the nineteenth-century Spiritualist movement, when instruments for spirit communication were being explored. American Spiritualist, author, and lecturer Hudson Tuttle became associated with The Psychograph, or Dial Planchette during the latter nineteenth century. Unlike a talking board with a loose planchette traveling across its surface, this form uses a rotating central dial and index to indicate letters, numbers, and predetermined responses on a stationary field.

Historical instructions describe lightly resting fingertips on the moving portion and discuss both group and solitary operation. This piece preserves that fundamental method as a distinctly modern, handcrafted interpretation, not an antique reproduction.

The Nevermore Edition

Inspired by Poe's dark Romanticism rather than a literal illustration of The Raven, the communication field pairs irregular Gothic lettering with individually burned feathers, ornamental linework, and dark borders. Four teardrop-shaped labradorite cabochons bring natural color and movement to the aged palette.

The rotating dial features an original eight-part composition of seven feathered sections and a distinct upper feather that serves as the active pointer. Hand-painted iridescent accents follow selected burned lines and shift subtly with the viewing angle, complementing the stones without obscuring the hand-burned imagery.

The Structure

  • Stationary base: A full alphabet, numerical sequence, and YES, NO, GOOD BYE, and DON'T KNOW responses, framed by Gothic ornament, feathers, labradorite, and darkened borders.
  • Rotating dial: A separate wooden component with a concealed low-friction mechanism, individually fitted to move freely while staying centered. The upper feather is the readable index.
  • Working design: The dial is removable, and the instrument is made to function rather than serve only as decoration.

Using the Psychograph

Place it on a stable, level surface and rest your fingertips lightly on the rotating dial. It can be worked alone or with others. Ask a question, allow the dial to move without deliberately directing it, and read the pointed index against the stationary field. Letters can be recorded in sequence. Avoid excessive downward pressure so the dial can move freely. The included instruction card provides further guidance and historical context.

Craftsmanship

Both wooden components feature fully hand-burned pyrography, including Gothic letters, individual feathers, ornamental lines, and architectural forms. The wood is stained and finished for an aged, muted appearance. Four individually selected polished labradorite cabochons are permanently set around the base. Each natural stone varies in pattern, coloration, inclusions, and flash.

Selected burned details are individually painted with an iridescent finish that shifts through green, blue, gold, and related tones in changing light. The rotating assembly was constructed, aligned, fitted, and tested by hand. Every burned line, letter, decorative element, stain application, painted detail, stone placement, and element of final assembly was completed by hand.

Dimensions

  • Stationary base: approximately 12 inches in diameter
  • Base thickness: approximately 1/2 inch
  • Rotating dial: approximately 7 inches in diameter

Handcrafted and Consecrated

Created slowly and intentionally by hand. Natural variation, slight asymmetry, differences in wood grain and stone, and visible handcrafted character are part of its individuality. Ritually prepared before leaving my hands. The underside is permanently marked Fifth Gate Mystic · Psychograph · Nevermore Edition · 2026, identifying its maker, edition, and year of creation.

Care and Notes

  • Operate upon a stable, level surface. Use light fingertip contact, and do not force or press down excessively on the dial.
  • The central dial is intentionally removable and may be carefully lifted and replaced when necessary.
  • Handle with care to preserve the finish, mechanism, stones, and painted details. Avoid prolonged moisture, extreme heat, and open flame. Wipe gently with a dry or slightly damp cloth as needed.
  • Labradorite is natural; variations, inclusions, internal lines, and differences in flash are inherent to each stone. The stones and iridescent detailing appear different depending on lighting and viewing angle.
  • Colors may vary slightly from photos due to lighting, monitor settings, natural wood variation, and the optical properties of labradorite and iridescent detailing.

This is a modern handcrafted interpretation of a historical form, not an original nineteenth-century artifact or an exact reproduction of a surviving Hudson Tuttle Psychograph.
